How to Create a Box Plot in Excel

Here is the instruction for making a box plot in Excel.

Enter your data set in one line in Excel.

Highlight your data set and insert a box plot.
3.
Add chart elements and make changes so your box plot appears informative and clear. Remember to title your plot!

Example 1

Make a box plot of the point distribution of scores on a school quiz:

1, 3, 5, 6, 6, 1, 3, 3, 4, 2, 2, 4, 6, 5, 2, 4

Open a spreadsheet in Excel and enter all the data points into a series of cells across one line. It’s up to you if you want to write them in a row or a column.

Highlight all the points and put them in a box plot.

Now your box plot looks like this

Add an appropriate title to make the chart even more explanatory. You can also add the axis title “Points” on the vertical axis.
