What Is Day and Night?

When events lasts for several hours, we have a new unit of time which is called daytime. You can think of daytime as the time between you wake up until you go to bed.

You can also think of daytime as the time from sunrise to sunset. Daytime is then longer in the summertime than in the winter. Night is the time between sunset and sunrise. Opposite from days, nights lasts longer in the winter.

How long day time and night time is, depends on where in the world you are. Together, a day and a night lasts for 24 hours. Let’s look at some places around the world:

New York

In the summer, a day lasts for about 15 hours and 10 minutes. The night lasts for 8 hours and 50 minutes. In the winter, a day lasts for about 9 hours and 15 minutes. The night lasts for 14 hours and 45 minutes.

The longest summer day lasts for 18 hours and 50 minutes. The night lasts for 5 hours and 10 minutes. The shortest day in the winter lasts for 5 hours and 55 minutes. The night lasts for 18 hours and 5 minutes.

Sydney

The longest summer day lasts for 14 hours and 25 minutes. The night lasts for 9 hours and 35 minutes. The shortest day in the winter lasts for 9 hours and 55 minutes. The night lasts for 14 hours and 5 minutes.

Think About This

If you are North of the Arctic circle, the sun never sets in the middle of summer, and in the winter, it never rises. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the sun outside.
