What Does Halving Mean in Math?

To divide by 2 means to give away half of what you have. Imagine that you have six pieces of candy and a friend comes over. To share the candy equally, you need to split the candy into two equally large piles and give one of the piles to your friend. When you have given one half to your friend, you will be left with half of what you had. You have divided your candy by 2.

Imagine that you have 6 toy cars, but you have to share them with your sister. When you split these 6 cars into two equal piles, there will be 3 cars in each pile. You give one pile of cars to your sister. You went from having 6 cars to having 3 cars, which means you have divided the number of cars you have by 2.
